The Many Hats of Running a Business: Balancing Data and People in the Recruitment Industry
My journey from a blue-collar recruiter in the mining industry, to a data analyst with an ASX-listed financial services firm and now to the founder of a specialised data & analytics recruitment agency, DR Analytics Recruitment, has equipped me with the ability to wear an array of hats. As a Founder, the mastery of wearing multiple 'hats' is akin to juggling several balls in the air and at times bending down to pick up another. Here are some of the roles I've learnt to juggle in the early stages of starting a business.
1. Recruitment Consultant
Firstly, and most obviously, I've taken on the role of a Recruitment Consultant. Here, my previous experiences come into play - my understanding of data analytics from my time in the field and my grasp of the recruitment processes. As a consultant, I strive to find the perfect matches between our clients' needs and the talents of data professionals, always considering the finer details that can make or break successful placements. Details from technical knowledge, stakeholder communication and project evaluation all come into play.
2. Business Development Manager
With this hat, I focus on the growth and expansion of DR Analytics Recruitment. I'm continually on the lookout for potential clients that can make use of our services. Understanding value proposition, qualification processes and succinct onboarding approaches is paramount. I use data-driven strategies to identify potential markets, gauge opportunities, and make informed decisions that help the business grow and thrive.
3. Marketing Specialist
As a Founder, there's no dedicated marketing team; that's another hat I wear. I engage in creating a strong brand identity, building a web presence, producing content, and driving campaigns to attract both clients and top-tier data professionals. This role has its own challenges, but it's also a fascinating opportunity to be innovative and creative.
4. Account & Client Relationship Manager
A major aspect of running a recruitment agency is building and maintaining strong relationships with clients. In this role, I ensure the needs of our clients are met, and they are satisfied with our services. The objective is to cultivate long-term relationships built on trust and consistent performance, which often involves keen attention to detail and a high level of personal communication. Value may often be provided outside just recruitment of new staff including retention reviews, salary benchmarking and industry knowledge.
5. Career Coach
As part of our services, I also act as a career coach. This is especially relevant when interacting with potential candidates for placement. I offer guidance on career progression, resume building, and interview techniques, using my industry experience to provide informed and practical advice. Most importantly - if a candidate is proceeding for a role through DR Analytics Recruitment I make them aware that the decision is entirely theirs and not to be made on my behalf as "you will be the one working 40 hours a week for x company". The transparency is key to trust.
6. Systems Improvement Specialist
Finally, but no less important, is my role as a Systems Improvement Specialist. Drawing heavily on my background as a data analyst, I'm always looking for ways to make our systems more efficient, utilising the latest tools in the AI space to streamline processes and improve our services.
A Continuing Journey
This multifaceted journey, though challenging, is incredibly rewarding. It's about more than just running a business; it's about providing value, creating opportunities, and making a difference in the industry I am passionate about.
