Unexpected Side Effect of WFH
My colleague once 'had to go to the bank' in the middle of the day and later confessed she attended a job interview!
This was back when we were 100% WFO (Work From Office) and it was a juggle to get time away from her desk, involving lying to her manager about what she was doing.
These days, the job search is a lot quieter with screening meetings often conducted virtually giving job seekers the benefits of interviewing in the comfort of their own home and with the luxury of time on their side.
Here's an overview of what we've seen in the last few years recruiting with WFH arrangements becoming more common:
The Ease of Virtual Interviews: Gone are the days when job seekers had to navigate the logistics of in-person interviews, from planning travel to taking time off work. Remote work has removed these barriers, making it possible for candidates to interview from the comfort of their homes. This ease of access has opened up a world of opportunities, allowing individuals to explore positions beyond their local regions without the added stress of commuting or being discreet about their job search.
A Broader Job Market: The change to virtual work environments has widened the job market, enabling candidates to consider opportunities nationwide—or even globally—without the need to relocate. This expansion benefits employers as well, offering a larger, more diverse candidate pool from which to select their next hires. Perth people are interviewing for companies like Canva that offer fully remote options!
Flexibility and Discretion: Remote work offers the flexibility to schedule interviews around existing work commitments without raising suspicion. This discretion is invaluable, as job hunting while employed is a delicate balance between exploring new opportunities and maintaining performance in your current role.
The Impact on Recruitment: For recruiters, the shift to remote work has facilitated a more efficient screening process, allowing us to connect with a broader range of candidates and conduct interviews seamlessly. This efficiency not only accelerates the hiring timeline but also enhances the overall experience for both candidates and employers.
The Future of Job Searching: As we move forward, the convenience of remote interviewing is likely to lead to a faster job market, with professionals feeling empowered to pursue new opportunities with greater ease. This shift mirrors the broader trend towards flexibility and mobility in the workforce, with priorities leaning towards work life balance.
With these five outcomes in mind, we can conclude that it's easier to change jobs therefore potentially reducing average tenure across industries. I don't want to get caught in looking at causation and not correlation!
Overall, the transition to remote work has been a game-changer in the recruitment world, removing physical barriers and making it easier for talent to connect with opportunities. As a recruiter, it's easier to interview people in the comfort of their own home online though I don't think a face-to-face interview or coffee will ever be replaceable!
