Breaking into Data
If you're already employed but are eager to transition into a data-centric role, why not start where you are? Speak to your managers and colleagues about how data is used and can be leveraged within your organisation. Take the initiative by volunteering to handle small data projects.

Hi [Manager's Name],
I hope this email finds you well. As you know, I've been working on various roles and projects within our [Department/Team] for the last [X months/years], and I've increasingly found myself interested in the potential of data to drive our strategies and goals forward.
The reason for my message today is to express my interest in taking on a more active role in data-related projects within our team. I believe that data is a valuable asset that, if leveraged correctly, can greatly enhance our decision-making processes and help us achieve our objectives more efficiently.
I've been self-educating on data analytics tools and techniques outside of my current responsibilities and recently completed a [relevant course/bootcamp] on [subject, e.g., Power BI, data analysis, etc.]. I think these skills could greatly benefit our team's ongoing and upcoming projects, such as [mention any relevant project, initiative, or goal].
To further develop my skills and contribute to our team, I would like to propose:
Taking ownership of [specific data-related tasks or projects].
Implementing a Power BI dashboard could significantly improve how we track and analyse [specific metrics or KPIs] for [Project/Initiative].
Completing this objective within [timeframe] in addition to my current duties.
I'm excited about the possibility of contributing more substantively to our team's data initiatives and am more than willing to collaborate closely with colleagues to ensure that these efforts align with our broader objectives. I would be thrilled to discuss this further and work out a plan that suits both the team's needs and my own professional development goals.
Would you be open to discussing this further in a one-on-one meeting?
Thank you for considering my request. I'm looking forward to your feedback and the opportunity to contribute more meaningfully to our team's success.
Best regards,
